Katsushika Ōi: The Fusion of Craft, Intuition, and Intelligence

Katsushika Ōi was a Japanese artist who lived and worked in the early to mid-nineteenth century. The images below were generated as a creative exercise using ChatGPT on May 3rd, 2026.

The Teahouse originated with a rather realistic depiction of a teahouse in 19th century Japan, based upon a prompt developed in my SERI project. Using this image, I instructed ChatGPT to gradually change from a more realistic illustration to the Ukiyo-E style, and to overlay the image with "artist notes" (including an English translation) and sketches.

Aesthetics, Technique, and Analysis represents a creative analysis of Ukiyo-e painting and printmaking as practices by Katsushika Ōi. The central conceit is that this is an analysis from an AI's perspective, with an emphasis on a mathematical approach.

Figure 3. The Story of Oi

The Story of Oi is a creative exploration of the life and works of the artist, as well as her major influences. It is creative both in the way it is presented (again, as a sort of "artist notes and sketches" style from the perspective of an AI) and in its content. In other words, the image is presented more as an interpretation of Ōi's work and life rather than as a factual biography.

These images are presented not as homages or factual records, but as images to be viewed and reacted to in their own right. I hope you enjoy them!
