AI-Assisted Visual Interpretations of Shakespeare's Sonnet #18

Sonnet 18

Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 is perhaps the most famous of his sonnets. In this sonnet, Shakespeare favors the timeless beauty of the person he addresses over the mercurial beauty of summer.

Sonnet 18: Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

by William Shakespeare

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer’s lease hath all too short a date;

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm'd;

But thy eternal summer shall not fade,

Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;

Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade,

When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st:

   So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,

   So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

But how will an AI visually interpret this Sonnet. To answer this question, I used ChatGPT and asked it to create an image interpreting Sonnet 18. The prompt ChatGPT came up with is below (the image is at the top of this post). I did not save the text record of this early exploration, but it is likely I used a GPT that I designed to create watercolor-based prompts for this image.

Create a watercolor painting inspired by Shakespeare's Sonnet 18, using the wet-on-wet technique for a fluid and blending effect. The scene features a beautifully ethereal person in a vibrant summer landscape. Include dynamic elements like paint splashes and swirling patterns to enhance the dreamy, romantic feel. The setting includes blooming flowers, a clear blue sky, and a gentle sun. The person, gender ambiguous, is dressed in flowing garments, adding to the painting’s timeless elegance.

Here is another interpretation from ChatGPT and Dall-e3, this one an ink illustration.
